"Dear John" portrays the complexities of love delving through every phase of union, joy, heartbreak and healing process between John and Savannah. They gets torn apart by circumstance and wounded by fate yet gets amended by the miracle of true love to heal.
John gets hooked up to the group of coeds rippling their essence of angelic blossom at the beach. He seizes the moment by diving into the sea to get the purse of a girl among coed named Savannah, when she accidently drowns her purse into the sea. John's little act of kindness ignites the bond of love between them. They shares promising seamless love for years though time unfolds "what is not meant is bound to shatter".
John being an army was forced to distance away from his lover after the end of his measured vaccation to get back to his tour of duty at the distant region. However, constant flow of written letters kept them in touch until Savannah breaks the usual beads of letter with a break up letter. Neither of them realises that the event of 9/11 will turn over a new transition, where John receives breakup letter from Savannah when he couldn't visit Savannah for quiet a long. Event of 9/11 portrays the tragedy of September 11 attack were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States in 2001. They carry on an aftermath life of bluffed consequence as if nothing had happened between them.
John was raised by a father who was very passionate to collect coins and tries to persuade John to follow his trail of passion yet he finds no suit in his father's persuasion. His father who lived battling with Asperger's syndrome dies soon after his return from an event of 9/11. John finds no home to go and decides to visit Savannah just to see her already married to Tim.
